Bielefeld

The city of Bielefeld, with a population just under 340.000 and encompassing 285 square kilometers, ranks among the 20 largest cities in Germany. Situated by the "Teutoburgerwald" forest, the university city is respected as an economic and cultural center. This is also reflected in the continually growing dance scene in Bielefeld. It all started in 1990 with the first "International Tanzprojekt". Since then, hundreds of dance enthusiasts have met each year in the Rudolf-Oetker-Halle to receive instruction from highly qualified international trainers.

Ulla and Tchekpo Dan Agbetou became the artistic directors of the "Tanzfestival Bielefeld" in 2002. In the meantime, many professional dance studios have established themselves in Bielefeld, in order to meet the great demand for dance classes year-round. Since the 2004/2005 season, the new dance ensemble at the municipal theater, directed by Gregor Zöllig, presents contemporary dance at its best. Beginning in 2006, the "Tanztheater Bielefeld" has had great success with the community dance project "Zeitsprung". Since 2008, the "Tanzfestival Bielefeld" is a member of the regional dance network "Tanz OWL".
